Abstract

In this article, the author examines the hy-pothesis that, although French in origin, the art of quilting in Quebec underwent a gradual transformation as a result of various foreign influences. She bases her analysis of quilting in Quebec on various British, American, English Canadian and Quebec publications, as well as on other sources such as estate inventories and quilts held in private and public collections. The author is thus able to demonstrate that quilting has existed in Quebec since the period of French rule, and that quilts were even made locally. By exploring a number of possible areas of for-eign influence, the author shows that quilt-making in Quebec maintained certain unique characteristics during its transformation.
