Abstract

The study presented in this article deals with the Fédération des jeunes francophones du Nouveau-Brunswick (FJFNB), which was known as Activités-Jeunesse when it was created in 1971. In the following text, we analyze the evolution of this organization, which has channelled and given shape to the collective action of a segment of Acadian youth since its creation in 1971. We find the FJFNB to be representative of organizations created in the 1970s, following the intervention of the Canadian State in the area of official languages, as well as the budding relationship between the State and Acadian and Francophone organizations after the Official Languages Act was adopted in 1969. Following its evolution over its 50 years of existence means also following the evolution of this relationship and better understanding the links that formed between the Canadian State and official language interest groups. The following text synthesizes the data we gathered on the organization’s evolution. It follows previous work on interventions by the Canadian government in minority Francophone milieus. We wished to understand how this youth organization became a recognized social player among Acadian associations, how it defined its role and positions itself in the Acadian community, along with its role in developing community governance in New Brunswick and its relationship with the Canadian State. Data analysis also allowed us to describe the lessons learned to engage youth in the organization.
