Call for Editors / Demande de candidatures à la rédaction
The Canadian Journal of Applied Linguistics is seeking a new editor or co-editors.
The CJAL is affiliated with the Canadian Association of Applied Linguistics (ACLA/CAAL). The policies and procedures of the CJAL are governed by the ACLA/CAAL.
Roles and Responsibilities:
In addition to the roles and responsibilities outlined in this call, the new editor will also assume those that are outlined in Article 8.8 of the ACLA/CAAL constitution.
The new editor will be immediately responsible for the forthcoming issue including any remaining work on manuscripts already submitted and any new manuscripts yet to be submitted for that issue.
The new editor and former editors are expected to communicate regularly during the first year of the new editor’s term in order to ensure a smooth transition and to facilitate the learning process for the new editorial team.
The outgoing editors will assist with the transition of editorial team members. Assistance may include making recommendations for new editorial team members and/or recommending members who choose to continue their appointment.
The new editor will be an ex-officio member of the ACLA/CAAL executive and will have full membership privileges including the right to vote.
Term of Office:
The new editor should be willing to commit to a 4-year term and is expected to apply for a SSHRC “Aid to Scholarly Journals” grant (usually in year three of the term).
The editor will have the option to renew for a subsequent term. If the editor(s) does not wish to seek an additional term, notice must be given to the President of the ACLA/CAAL by the end of the third year of the first term. A call for a new editor will then be launched.
If the editor continues for a subsequent term, editor should give one year notice to the President of the ACLA/CAAL before ending the subsequent term. If a suitable editor cannot be found, the current editor may continue for an additional period of time until a replacement can be secured.
Applications from scholars interested in working together as co-editors are strongly encouraged. In this case, each applicant’s letter should describe their individual qualifications and how these would complement those of the person applying to be co-editor.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate(s) will:
- be working in the field of applied linguistics at a Canadian post-secondary institution and possess a strong scholarly publication record,
- be able to read and conduct preliminary evaluation of manuscripts in French and in English.*
Prior experience as an editor or guest-editor of an academic journal is preferable but not required.
*Note: Since 2019, the Journal has expanded the core editorial team to include a French editor who oversees all French-language manuscripts. Nevertheless, the editor-in-chief is expected to be functionally bilingual to oversee all operations of the Journal.
Application Procedure:
Those interested in being considered for the position should submit the following as an electronic attachment to the president of the ACLA/CAAL at the address below:
(a) a letter of interest;
(b) a current curriculum vitae;
(c) a statement of support from Dean and/or Department Chair outlining the institutional support that would be provided (e.g., course release, graduate research assistant).
