Abstract

This research relate the career of an 18th century négociant-fonctionnaire (trader/official) from île Royale/Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, namely Jean-Baptiste Dupleix Silvain. Within the context of a rather fluid colonial society, both economically and socially, Dupleix Silvain can be described as being a middle class notable. One of the fundamental question guiding this research is to establish if small notables such as Dupleix Silvain were even more resilient than the elite merchants, the higher ranked officials or the engagés (hired hands). The results of this research allowed us to consider a global biographical study of the entrepreneurs and middle ranked officials at île Royale.
