Welcome to the latest edition of Acadiensis, Vol. 53, No. 2!

This issue presents a forum commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Marshall decision and featuring Mi’kmaw language as part of our ongoing commitment to reflect the linguistic and cultural diversity of Atlantic Canada. This forum, drawn from a Learning Lodge held at St. Francis Xavier University, honours Donald Marshall Jr.’s legacy and includes reflections and teachings by L. Jane McMillan, William C. Wicken, Eric Zscheile, and Fred Metallic. The forum also provides visuals of Iapjiw Mikmwite’lmulten – We will always remember, an exhibition held at the StFX Art Gallery in 2024 that displayed Alan Syliboy’s Two Eels with Yellow Spirits painting also featured on the issue’s cover.

Research articles include Andrew Nurse’s study of social activist organizations and political bureaucracy in 1970s Halifax, Rebecca White’s examination of women’s agency as evidenced through New Brunswick’s welfare system records of the mid-twentieth century, Colin Osmond’s exploration of Mi’kmaw spiritual life and settler incursion at St. Anne’s Mission in Maligomish, and Harry Holman’s analysis of the complexity and evolution of Prince Edward Island’s inshore mackerel trade, both in the late nineteenth century. This issue concludes with review essays by Elizabeth Kirkland and Phillip Buckner. Kirkland examines Heidi MacDonald’s We Shall Persist that centres on women’s suffrage in Atlantic Canada, while Buckner analyzes several works considered to fit in the domain of Atlantic World history and provides critique on Canada’s place in these studies.
