Afin de commémorer le 150e anniversaire de l’affaire Louis Mailloux en 1875, la Municipalité de Caraquet organise un mini-colloque sur cette question le 15 mai 2025 au Village Historique Acadien de Bertrand, près de Caraquet. Le comité organisateur a déjà lancé un appel d’offre de communications afin de rassembler au moins six conférenciers, partageant un intérêt commun envers cet événement et ses retombées sur l’évolution des droits linguistiques de la minorité acadienne du Nouveau-Brunswick. À noter que cet événement est ouvert au grand public. Rappelons-nous que l’affaire Louis Mailloux avait gagné sa place dans l’histoire de la province en 1972, avec la publication du texte « The Caraquet Riot of 1875 » de George F.G. Stanley dans la revue Acadiensis.
In January 1875 the Acadian Community of Caraquet witnessed a tragic event, costing the lives of the young Louis Mailloux and the militia man John Gifford from the Miramichi. The Municipality of Caraquet wishes to commemorate the 150th anniversary of this dark day by organizing a one-day Conference on the 15h of May at the Village Historique Acadien in Bertrand, near Caraquet. Several scholars have been invited to share their views on this event and its aftermath regarding the language rights of the Acadian Minority of New Brunswick. This tragic event had its first audience in the Journal Acadiensis in 1972, thanks to the article of George F.G. Stanley, “The Caraquet Riot of 1875”.
