Abstract

Research on regional theatre is always a marginal preoccupation in the field of theatrical studies. The subject itself is a problem, and it is thus necessary to define it accurately. Once defined, it needs an adapted theoretical setting and methodology. The theory of the Literary Institution seems appropriate in this context. Indeed, it allows for study of the masterpiece as well as of the marginal work. But most of all it leads to the discovery that the marginal work is a by-product of the Institution, and that the only thing marginal about it is the perspective from which it is viewed. For what is regional theatre, other than someone's view of it from afar? Les recherches sur le théâtre en région constituent toujours une préoccupation marginale dans le champ des études théâtrales. L'objet fait problème, il faut donc le définir avec précision. Une fois défini, il commande un cadre théorique et une méthodologie qui lui soient adaptés. La théorie de l'Institution littéraire nous semble appropriée dans ce contexte. En effet, elle permet l'étude du chef-d'oeuvre autant que de l'oeuvre marginale. Elle permet surtout de découvrir que l'oeuvre marginale est un sous-produit de l'Institution et qu'elle n'a de marginal que le regard qu'on lui porte.Qu'est-ce donc que le théâtre régional, sinon le regard de l'autre qui, de loin, est porté sur lui?
