Abstract

In a sequence of transcribed and paraphrased conversations that took place over three days in May, 2003, months before her death, Carol Shields discusses feminism, Jane Austen, her favourite Canadian writers, and her teaching career, among other topics. Shields also comments briefly on several of her own works, including Swann, The Stone Diaries, Larry’s Party, Happenstance, Unless, and her unfinished novel in progress at the time, Segue. Nora Foster Stovel weaves in descriptions of her visit with Don and Carol Shields and her appreciation, as critic and reader, of Shields’s work.
