Abstract

Local music scenes remain an important space for identity formation within the contemporary music industries. The city of Saint-Étienne, France is one such scene. Drawing on interviews with local musicians and cultural figures, along with observation and analysis of local music practices, this article examines the ways in which connections to the city’s industrial, working-class past are made manifest within the products and activities of its contemporary music scene.
