Abstract

In this close reading of Li Rvinant, the most recent work by FrancoManitoban playwright Rhéal Cenerini, we begin by commenting on the formal dimension of the play where the innovative use of Mitchif French reveals the dynamics at play between language and identity. A mythocritical approach will then allow us to study the manner in which Cenerini is inspired by the « rhétorique du métissage » (Toumson) as he proposes a very symbolic play where the theme of salvation is developed based on a palimpsest, the rewriting of regional but also universal History. We conclude by identifying the potential impact and meaning of these two elements, that is to say the expression of an identity through the phonetic transcription of the essentially oral French Mitchif language and the ideological rhetoric legitimizing «  métissage  » (hybridization) that Cenerini proposes in his tragedy.
