Résumé

In light of ongoing centennial commemorations of the 1914 Komagata Maru episode through conferences, symposia, performances, the launching of a postage stamp by Canada Post, and art exhibitions across Canada and India, this essay revisits Sharon Pollock’s play The Komagata Maru Incident, first performed in 1976. Examining the play’s aesthetic elements in which circus acts play a central role, the essay attempts to understand the role of such theatrical enactments in memorializing and reviving this historical moment, and in offering new insights on earlier histories of mobility and migration, histories that link Canada and India through the British Empire.
