Abstract
Abstract: This article focuses on the generational, identity, and caste conflicts within the complex socio-political “world of the dance” in Southern India. After introducing ethnologists who paved the way to the contemporary questioning on the importance of the scholar ’ s personal perception and “subjectivity” on the interpretation of the data collected, I devote my analysis to my own experience in India during my fieldwork and dance training. In particular, I explore frictions and caste conflicts between the professional hereditary artists and the new practitioners of the mid-20th century who belong to the urban Brahmin elites. Finally, I also question the controversial role played by the foreign students within the peculiar context of dance in South India.- The author retains copyright over the work.
