Abstract

La collection de chansons d'Elisabeth B. Greenleaf et de Grace Y. Mansfield, Ballads and Sea Songs of Newfoundland, publiée en 1933, a inauguré la recherche académique dans le domaine de la chanson populaire à Terre-Neuve. Léclairante Introduction du volume, la correspondance et les interviews de son auteur témoignent de la personnalité affirmée et la sensibilité receptive de Greenleaf, et qui plus que toute théorie en la matière, lont amenée à jeter un regard avant-coureur sur la chanson traditionnelle. Echappant au débat de ses origines et de la ‘pureté de la tradition, Greenleaf en a révélé la dimension musicale, négligée jusqualors par les folkloristes américains, autant que la réalité fondamentale au sein dun contexte humain.
