Abstract

Barbara LeBlartc describes how the Churchs criticisms of dancing as likely to lead to immorality were reinforced by the attitude of the French-Canadian community. She shows the ambivalent nature of this attitude as expressed through legends and songs. On the one hand the community needed dance as a social and enjoyable pastime, and on the otherfeared it as likely to break down the conventions of society.
