Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published nor is it before another journal for consideration; or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor.
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format; text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; and employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses).
  • Illustrative material, such as photographs, artwork, and diagrams are submitted as supplementary files, NOT embedded in the Microsoft Word document. Tables and graphs that are editable (i.e., text) may be included separately or as part of the manuscript.
  • The text meets this journal's formatting requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines found in About the Journal. If the journal section is peer reviewed, author identification has been removed, and "Author" and year have been used in the bibliography and footnotes, instead of authors' names, titles, etc. The author's name has been removed from the document's Properties, which in Microsoft Word is found in the File menu.
  • All articles should include an abstract of not more than 250 words.
  • All submissions should include a short (50-100 word) biography for each of the authors. The biography should be written in the third person and highlight current position(s), institutional affiliation(s), and may include recent publications or achievements, and any other details that may be relevant.

Author Guidelines

Newfoundland and Labrador Studies accepts submissions of scholarly articles, research notes, and original documents (introduced and annotated) year round.

1) Manuscripts, including an abstract of approximately 100 words, should be submitted to via the OJS platform. For questions about using or accessing OJS, please email nls@mun.ca
2) For consideration as articles, manuscripts should normally be between 7,500 and 12,500 words, including explanatory endnotes but excluding the abstract, references and any appendices. Significantly shorter manuscripts will be considered as research notes.
3) Since the journal is interdisciplinary, contributors may use the citation method usual for the discipline concerned. However, the journal uses endnotes rather than footnotes.
4) Spelling follows Canadian norms. In case of uncertainty, contributors should consult The Canadian Oxford Dictionary.
5) Authors are responsible for obtaining copyright clearances where applicable.
6) When an article has been accepted for publication, the author will be asked to make the text conform to the house style, and to sign a consent to publish form. Authors retain copyright to their work, and all published content is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0
