Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • All URL addresses in the text (e.g., http://pkp.sfu.ca) are activated and ready to click.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • The text, if submitted to a peer-reviewed section (e.g., Articles), has had the authors' names removed. If an author is cited, "Author" and year are used in the bibliography and footnotes, instead of author's name, paper title, etc. The author's name has also been removed from the document's Properties, which in Microsoft Word is found in the File menu.

Author Guidelines

The Journal of Conflict Studies is published twice a year, in Spring and Fall. The Editorial Board welcomes unsolicited submission of article manuscripts, review essays and book reviews on topics written in the field of low-intensity conflict studies, such as: terrorism, revolutionary/civil war, guerrilla warfare, counter-insurgency/counter-terrorism operations, propaganda and psychological warfare, intelligence activities, media coverage of such conflict, peacekeeping, foreign/military policy and strategic studies as they relate to the field. Manuscripts submitted for consideration by the journal should be sent to: Brent Wilson, Executive Editor, The Journal of Conflict Studies, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, E3B SA3. Authors must provide three copies of the proposed article/review, in either English or French. They should be accompanied by an abstract of 100- 200 words and by a biographical note on the author. Ideally submissions should be up to 10,000 words in length, with complete endnotes included on separate sheets. Manuscripts must be typed or word-processed and double-spaced. Any tables, charts or graphs must be on separate sheets and in camera-ready form. These should be kept to a minimum. For standard punctuation, documentation and format, see Turabian Manual for Writers (5th ed.). Since the journal is designed for a broad readership, ranging from defense specialists and academics to interested laymen, authors are urged to avoid 'jargon' whenever possible. Manuscripts submitted are reviewed by the Editorial Advisory Board and external referees, a process which usually takes three to four months. Manuscripts will then be rejected and returned, accepted on condition of author revisions or accepted with minor editorial revisions. Final proofs are not normally sent to authors once any major textual revisions have been approved because of the limited time-frame. Copyright on published material is retained by the Centre for Conflict Studies unless otherwise determined. Normally, this means an article may reappear, as a reprint with full-credit given to the author, in another publication three or four months after the article's publication in The Journal of Conflict Studies. Authors are notified where appropriate. In no case does The Journal of Conflict Studies receive monetary compensation for such reprints. Correspondence regarding Review Essays and Book Reviews should be directed to Peter J. Woolley, Department of Social Sciences, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Madison, NJ, USA, 07940.
