Rear-Admiral Hydrographic Engineer Julio Zeferino SCHULTZ XAVIER(1850-1939)b yVic t o r in oCOSTA, Vic e-Ad m ir a l (re tire d ).(Reproduced from the Anais do Club Militar Naval, Lisbon, January-February, 1940,page 79).It is with deep regret that we announce the death of one of the most distinguished officers of the Portuguese Navy, who leaves a great and illustrious name, above all as a man of inflexible will in the performance of duty. He was a conscientious and upright officer, as proved during his fifty three years of service in the Navy. This officer was, in fact, the soul of the Portuguese coast-lighting, bringing it up to the modern service requirements. Thanks to his devotion, intelligence and zeal, the coast of Portugal ceased to be the Black Coast, as it was known abroad, a reproach to the good name of our country. It is merely necessary to consider the numerous lighthouses which profusely light our coast to-day. In each of them one notices how meticulously and honestly was evolved the accommodation for the personnel, which finds in them the degree of comfort necessary to the discharge of so arduous a task. The name of Admiral Sc h u lt zis to-day respected by the lighthouse personnel, worthy itself of all praise. His name was given to the lighthouse tender.Having paid tribute with these just and sincere words to the memory of the illustrious deceased, a resume will now be given of his military life: He saw service on the 18th of October 1869 as midshipman on the supernumerary list, being promoted in the active list on the 2nd of August 1870, and with a pay of 12,000 reis on the 25th January 18 7 1; to naval cadet on 2nd October 1872; to Sublieutenant on 20th November 1875.He was appointed Rear-Admiral on 7th January 19 11.He served in the following ships : The corvettes D. Joao I, Estefania,Sagres, Duque da Terceira, Sa da Bandeira and Rainha de Portugal, the frigate D. Fernando, the transports Africa and India, the receiving ship India, the cruiser Almirante Reis.
He commanded the corvette Rainha de Portugal, the gunboat D. Luis, the cruiser Almirante Reis and the Naval division of Indico. Many are the achievements listed on his honourable record of services, which, however, we regretfully omit here due to lack of space. His last appointment was as commander of the Naval division of instruction and manœuvre, in October 1913.He held the following posts: Chief of the 6th Division of the Council of the Admiralty: Assistant-Chief of the General Staff; President of the Commission of purchases; Chief of the 8th Division of the General Direction of the Navy; Administrator of the Services in which we had the honour of serving as secretary of the A.S.F., under the orders of the illustrious deceased; Director Genera) of the Navy and member of the Jury of the Supreme Military Court. He was decorated with the silver and gold medals for exemplary behaviour, Knight, Officer, Commander (for foreign service), Grand Officer (for distinguished services) of the Order of Aviz; silver medal for Philan- tropy and Charity. We believe to have shown, though very briefly, what he did for the Navy; it was always gallantly that he discharged the important duties entrusted to him. The death of Admiral Sc h u ltzis indeed a great loss for the Portuguese Navy. We tender to his bereaved family the expression of our heart-felt sympathy.m m na
