Forest roads play a vital role in society by providing diverse stakeholders with access to sustain their livelihoods, yet they also create environmental, economic, and social challenges that are becoming more severe with climate change. This paper reviews these challenges and introduces a hierarchical planning framework that helps to organise decisions across different temporal and spatial scales. The framework is designed not only to improve long-term sustainability and reduce impacts but also to serve as a foundation for STEM education, offering real-world examples that encourage systems thinking and problem-solving. The paper explores innovative approaches that support better planning and monitoring of forest road networks. By integrating management practices into education, this approach fosters future professionals who are well-equipped to manage forest roads effectively and sustainably.
