Resumen

In April 1979, the National Geodetic Survey used an inertial survey system (ISS) to establish second-order horizontal control along the Louisiana Gulf Coast in support of hydrography. The ISS, successfully installed in a NOAA Bell 204 helicopter, established or checked the position of 106 stations along the coast in 6 days. This paper will discuss inertial technology, operational scenarios, various operational limitations, and how the inertial system was and could be utilized to support hydrographic operations.
