Abstract

For the last several years various telemetry systems have been employed by the Marine Sciences Directorate, Environment Canada, to transmit tide and water-level data. Gauging stations along our coasts and in the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence River System have been equipped successfully with instruments to obtain real time data for better water management. This paper describes in general terms, the four different systems presently in use, and gives an example of how the data are used in automated hydrographic surveying. Location and approximate capital and operating costs, as well as the man-years required to maintain, modify and to expand the facilities, are shown.
