On the Predictability of Currents

Abstract

The inclusion of cur rent predictions in conventional tide tables is questioned, since currents are known to have a high level of irreducible variability and since the quality of the predictions can seldom be controlled by a systematic comparison with observations. Two months of current observations at Race Rocks, B.C., are checked against their predicted values : the accuracy of the predictions is found to be much lower than that implied in the tables.
