Philology and the Complex Present

Based on the sketch of a long-range history of philology as textual curatorship, this essay tries to assess its practical value and its epistemological status in a cultural situation which, over the past quarter century, has been profoundly transformed by electronic technology. The assessment includes a critique of the high-flying hopes attached to the digital humanities.

Offrant une esquisse d’histoire à long terme de la philologie en tant que conservatrice textuelle, cet article tente d’évaluer sa valeur pratique et son statut épistémologique dans une situation culturelle qui, au cours du dernier quart de siècle, a été profondément transformée par la technologie électronique. Ce tour d’horizon comprend une critique des hautes attentes liées aux humanités numériques.
