NOTES
1 This essay began in a shorter form as a scheduled response to papers presented by LOUISE
FORSYTH ('Penelope, Cinderella or Amazon?: Exploding Codes and Structures, Bursting
Dimensions in Space') and DOMINIQUE LAFON (Les rôles féminins dans le théâtre québécois
contemporain, Jocaste, Cassandre et Clytemnestre') at the first session of the meetings of the
Association for Canadian Theatre Research at the Learned Societies, Kingston, Ontario, May
1991. Although it has been revised for publication, the essay is the trace of this specific
occasion. A version of DOMINIQUE LAFON's paper, 'Entre Cassandre et Clyternnestre: le
théâtre québécois, 1970-90' has recently appeared in Theatre Research International vol 17 no
3 pp 236-245; Abstracts in French and English of both papers are available in the Association
de la recherche théâtrale au Canada/Association for Canadian Theatre Research Newsletter vol
15 no 2, fall 1991 pp 21, 26

2 I should like to thank LOUISE FORSYTH for inviting me to take on this particular role even
though I am not a 'specialist' in theatre but rather, stage struck since childhood, an avid theatre-goer
