RICHARD BRUCE KIRKLEY
This catalogue lists Canadian stage plays presented on English language television in Canada between 1952 and 1987. Producing stage plays for television was a common practice in North America during the early years of black and white television. Anthology drama programs dedicated to the production of single plays, either written directly for television or adapted from other media, were coveted by sponsors who wished to associate their products with the prestige and status of "high" culture. In Canada, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation regularly presented classic and contemporary stage drama on anthologies such as CBC Television Theatre, General Motors Presents, Folio and Festival. Scattered among these early offerings were works by Canadian playwrights John Coulter, Robertson Davies, Gratien Gélinas, Patricia Joudry, James Reaney and Gwen Pharis Ringwood. As television drama evolved, however, continuing series such as I Love Lucy and Gunsmoke from the United States eventually proved more popular, and profitable, so that the anthology programs gradually disappeared. Many Canadians, bombarded by American popular culture on the small screen, began to see the CBC's continued presentation of stage plays and single teleplays throughout the 1960's as an élitist attempt to "ram culture down our throats." In 1969, under increasing pressure to become more universally accessible and financially self-sufficient, the CBC decided to shift more resources toward producing the popular genres of television drama. As a result, the network cancelled the prestigious and long-running anthology Festival which, over the years, had brought an outstanding diversity of drama into Canadian homes.
In 1974, theatre director John Hirsch was appointed the new Head of CBC Drama, and the tradition of presenting stage plays on television was briefly revived. Recognizing the hotbed of new talent in the Canadian theatre scene of the early 'seventies, the CBC asked John Hirsch to forge stronger links with the thriving alternative companies and to bring some of their creativity and energy to a national audience. During Hirsch's tenure, several acclaimed contemporary plays from the Canadian stage were presented on the new anthologies Opening Night, Performance, and Front Row Centre: Toronto Workshop Production's Ten Lost Years, Theatre Passe Muraille's The Farm Show and 1837.- The Farmers' Revolt, David French's Of the Fields, Lately, Michel Tremblay's Les Belles-Soeurs, and Carol Bolt's One Night Stand. Many of these productions demonstrate an engaged and vigorous experimentation with the techniques of producing stage plays and performances for television. Yet although the plays were often seen by over a million viewers, this was a relatively small number compared to the huge audiences for such contemporary American shows as All in the Family or M*A*S*H. Given the highly competitive broadcasting environment of his day, and faced with budgetary cutbacks, Hirsch found it increasingly difficult to justify stage productions. By the time he left the CBC in 1978, the drama department had again turned its attention toward other, more popular genres of television drama.
During the 1980s, Canadian stage plays appeared only sporadically on the small screen, although the quality of several productions was outstanding, most notably David Fennario's Balconville, John Gray and Eric Peterson's Billy Bishop Goes To War, and Linda Griffiths' Maggie and Pierre.
This catalogue is the product of extensive research in the Audio-Visual Archives of the National Archives of Canada, and in the CBC Drama Department. Only plays which were originally composed or created for the stage are represented here, in order to avoid confusion with other forms of cross-media transposition (for example, teleplays later adapted to the stage, such as George Ryga's Indian). The catalogue is organized chronologically according to the telecast date of the productions. A cross-referenced author and title index is found at the end. Only productions for which actual telecast dates could be confirmed are included.
Each entry first records the author, title and publication information for the play. The original stage production is recorded next, followed by complete information (where available) on the television production. Where a videotape copy is known to exist, the location is indicated. Researchers wishing to screen videotapes should contact the National Archives in Ottawa, where arrangements can be made to view programs on site. In special circumstances, the Archives can arrange to have videotape copies of programs made (researchers will be invoiced for all costs). However, please be aware that permission to make copies must first be obtained from the production body that owns the rights (the staff at the Archives can provide further information on who to contact for permission). Several programs included in the catalogue are not currently held by the Archives and researchers will need to contact the original producer or broadcaster directly to make arrangements to screen these shows.
