WILLIAM W. FITZHUGH , a research curator at the Smithsonian Institution where he directs its Arctic Studies Center, began his career excavating with Elmer Harp at Port au Choix’s Phillips Garden site in 1963. His research in Labrador from 1967-1990 laid the foundation for central and northern Labrador prehistory and environmental relationships. In the early 1990s he worked in Frobisher Bay with the Meta Incognita Project. Since 2001 he has been exploring the southern limits of Inuit settlement on the Quebec Lower North Shore while also conducting fieldwork in Mongolia. Email address: fitzhugh@si.edu
