A key actor of the relationship, the material object plays a vital role in regulating human interaction and imposes its sovereignty in the colonial encounter. The exchange of objects is not only a powerful substitute to words, it becomes a form of communication in itself, a material communication more powerful than speech. Résumé À travers l’analyse de récits de voyage en Nouvelle France aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, il s’agit d’analyser le langage des objets et leur rôle dans les rencontres entre Français et Amérindiens. Intermédiaire privilégié des premiers contacts, l’objet est en effet un acteur et un agent central de la rencontre qui se substitue à la parole pour s’ériger en véritable langage. Nous verrons comment cette communication matérielle au service de l’interaction régit la rencontre coloniale, étant une voie d’accès à l’autre et à son territoire. }, journal={Material Culture Review}, author={Briand, Catherine}, year={2007}, month={Jan.} }
