Positioned halfway between an economic and social history perspective, and a cultural history and mindset perspective, this article aims to highlight the conditions of passage from a pattern of “traditional” consumption to a pattern of “modern” consumption, where the pleasure of buying replaces the need to purchase, in a rural French village at the turn of nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In this regard, the archives of a grocery store offer an invaluable evidence of change in consumer behaviour. The goal is to better understand, in a particular space and time, the relationships that people have with objects.
