Abstract

The kg entrepreneurs with large land leases and the subcontractors who received logging contracts from them were the principal actors in the organization of logging taking shape in the nineteenth century. Row were things organized? What part did the subcontractors play in the control of logging operations? What were the physical working conditions of subcontractors? These are some of the questions answered in this article. The author also shows how the way operations were organized served to isolate the workers in small groups and helped to preserve the status quo with regard to working conditions.
