American Studies Association / Canadian Association for American Studies

1 The American Studies Association and the Canadian Association for American Studies are sponsoring an international convention to be held in Toronto on 2-5 November 1989. The associations are composed of persons having an interdisciplinary interest in American culture or civilization. The programme committee for the convention has selected as the theme of this year's meetings "Amercas '89: Five Centuries of Endings and Beginnings." The call for papers mentioned a number of subject categories which may interest material historians, including "Transitions in Material Culture, the Visual Arts, and/or Architecture in the Americas," "Urbanism in a Trans-National Context," and "Understanding the Handicapped over the Centuries." The deadline for proposals for this conference was 15 January 1989. More information on the conference itself, however, may be obtained from Professor John N. Ingham, Department of History, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 1A1, telephone (416) 978-4054.
