Abstract

The 250th anniversary of the American Revolution is being celebrated by the federal government in 2026. This anniversary has generated the publication of a number of related monographs. The books reviewed here complicate the mainstream Patriot-centred narrative of the revolution by focusing on the Loyalists and loyalism, as well as the impact of the northern colonies (in what would become Canada) and Indigenous homelands on the formation of the United States. Jones, Lennox, Grant and Minty encourage us to complicate the histories of the revolution by considering such units of analysis as comparative communities; individual actors ensconced in various contexts of the revolution; and broader frameworks such as the British Atlantic World, the Loyal Atlantic, and the Enlightenment Atlantic
